JANET STEEN

Steen has been an editor and writer for more than fifteen years. She started on the editorial staff at Esquire, where she tweaked the prose of writers including Norman Mailer, Denis Johnson, and Mary Gaitskill. She went on to become the books editor at Time Out New York, an editor at Us Weekly, and the literary editor at Details, positions that required her to tackle towering piles of galleys and spot new literary talent. She has written about books, music, film, and other varieties of pop culture for the New York Times Book Review, Interview, Details, Us Weekly, Time Out New York, and Sports Illustrated for Women. Her profile subjects include such widely varying personalities as Steve Martin, Barry White, Martin Amis, and Dennis Hopper. As a freelance editor she has worked on everything from textbooks to pop-music anthologies. She received her M.A. in writing from Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with John Barth and Edna O'Brien and where she also taught an undergraduate course on creative writing and literature. She currently teaches a course entitled Writing about Pop Culture for Magazines for mediabistro.

REBECCA WOLFF

Wolff has an uncanny knack for the elegant sentence and its efficient placement. Wolff has been in the business of editing texts for ten years, since she was hired as Associate Editor of Gulf Coast, a literary journal out of the University of Houston. Her subsequent experience includes eight years of editing her own print journal, Fence (www.fencemag.com), and in her private consultancy helping many poets, fiction writers, and average everyday citizens shape their manuscripts and texts. Her copyediting and proofreading clients have included Artforum, Bookforum, Esquire, Fodor's Travel Guides, PenguinPutnam, Publishers Weekly, Thunder's Mouth Press, the Whitney Museum of Contemporary American Art, and numerous others. She has edited everything from travel guides to curriculum vitae to romance novels to slender volumes of poetry. Rebecca Wolff is herself a poet, with books published by the University of Illinois Press and W. W. Norton, and has taught courses at The New School on the art and practice of putting together poetry manuscripts. A native New Yorker (1967), her degrees are from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1991) and the Iowa Writers Workshop (1993).

JOANNA YAS

Yas began a career in publishing in 1997, when she was associate editor of Zoetrope: All Story. Since 1999, she has been the editor of Open City, a literary journal and book publisher, where she has edited fiction, essays, and poetry by writers such as David Berman, Sam Lipsyte, Meghan Daum, Edward St. Aubyn, James Lasdun, Alicia Erian, Robert Olen Butler, Marcelle Clements, and Nick Tosches. She also writes promotional material (catalog copy, jacket copy, pitch letters, and press releases), and is an expert publicist—her authors have received reviews in The New York Times, The Village Voice, New York Review of Books, and The Nation. She has copyedited and proofread for a variety of clients, including Grove Press and The New School, and has been a freelance editor on book projects ranging from murder mysteries to memoir. She has conducted numerous seminars on writing and publishing at The New School, Sarah Lawrence, and the University of Massachusetts, and has been an editorial consultant for Creative Capital and The Association of Alternative News Weeklies. Originally from Massachusetts, she received her BA from Hampshire College, where she studied writing and literature.

BARBARA SPINDEL

Spindel's writing and editing experience stretches from the political trenches to the halls of academia to the world of pop culture. She spent three years doing research and writing for liberal advocacy group People for the American Way before going on to complete a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota (where she also taught freshman composition). For the past decade, she has worked as a freelance editor and writer; she has edited and copyedited for Spin, mtv.com, and ArtForum, and her writing has appeared in Time Out New York, Details, Us Weekly, Spin, Newsweek.com, and mtv.com, in addition to a number of scholarly journals. Her B.A., in English and American Studies, is from Wesleyan University.
