Joyce Carol Oates - On Writing Characters

As a poet, I tend to disagree with Oates' assessment that poets begin with a rhythm much like music. I often start with a subject, usually a person or type of person or a setting when I begin a poem.

It's interesting to hear what novelists believe goes through a poet's mind. Then again, I also write fiction, so perhaps that colors my poetry.
